TITLE: Speech Language Pathologist-Assistant (SLP-A)
PAY GRADE: Classified Salary Schedule
SUPERVISOR: Director of Special Programs and Speech Language Pathologists (SLP)
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Work days will be designated by the Board approved School Calendar. The first day of work will commence during the week before the first day of school and the last day of work will coincide with the last day of school. Works on-site according to designated schedule.
Under the direction of a Licensed Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP), the SLP-A assists in providing speech therapy services to special education students in accordance with Individualized Education Program (IEP); maintains records and documentation on students; and performs related duties as required.
Associate degree in and/or graduation from a Speech-Language Pathology assistant certificate program, OR Bachelor's degree in Speech-Language Pathology or Communication Disorders with a preferred minimum of 70 hours field work/clinical experience from a Board-approved program required. Prior successful experience performing duties and responsibilities associated with this position. Spanish language skills or bilingual/biliterate preferred.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (This list of essential duties is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class. Implement therapeutic programs and treatment within the instruction and guidelines established by the supervising SLP. Assist individual students and small groups of students through instructional activities designed to remediate the identified communication disability(ies). Examples of this include:
a. Provide drill and practice activities
b. Monitoring of student progress
c. Provide and Assist in-classroom models of intervention
d. Development of materials and lesson plans for service delivery
e. Attend IEP meetings with supervising SLP as per requested
Participate in team planning to meet the communication/education needs of students
Prepare, maintain, assemble and return instructional materials and operate instructional media for identified students
Work collaboratively with the certificated staff to identify, prepare and operate instructional media for identified students
Collect and organize data and information for identified students
Collaborate in designing schedules, charts, and rosters for students being served
Record grades, progress notes, and information for students being served. Log services for Medicaid billing
Maintain files consistent with the standards set by Speech Language Pathologist
Prepare, distribute, and collect forms needed by certificated staff for identified students
Attend Individual Education Plan (I.E.P.) meetings and other pertinent meetings for identified students as determined by supervising SLP
Participate in professional growth opportunities as agreed upon among the Speech Language Pathologist Assistant, the Speech Language Pathologist and the Director of Special Programs
May work in a variety of locations, including school or district offices
Perform other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of speech-language pathology equipment, materials, and procedures. Knowledge of language development in children. Knowledge of articulation development. Knowledge of learned individual needs of children in special education. Knowledge of student behavior management techniques and strategies. Knowledge of correct English usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation and math. Knowledge of simple record keeping and record management. Knowledge of personal computers and software, including work processing, learning and educational software. Knowledge of oral and written communication skills. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and collaborative working relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions, including intervention plans. Ability to utilize specialized communication systems and devices. Ability to assist in the educational program of assigned student(s). Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form. Ability to learn and utilize current speech-language methods and procedures to be followed in an instructional setting. Ability to maintain student performance documentation. Ability to perform clerical tasks and operate office machines. Ability to manage and use time effectively. Ability to meet the physical, mental and environmental demands of the position. Ability to present and maintain a pleasant appearance and demeanor. Ability to exercise independent judgment and problem-solving skills related to specific areas of responsibility. Ability to work successfully with diverse groups of people. Ability to be a productive and active team member. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements, Board of Education policies, and applicable State and Federal laws.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 35% sitting, 30% walking, and 35% standing. While most duties are performed indoors, the employee may be required to perform duties outdoors in various types of weather, including inclement weather with temperatures at or below freezing for extended periods of time. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. The employee frequently interacts with students and staff.
