TITLE:  SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST

 
QUALIFICATIONS
Pupil Personnel Services Certificate with appropriate endorsements, such as Speech-Language Pathologist
Ability to effectively apply the principles of assessment, treatment, and prevention of speech, language, and hearing disorders
Demonstrated knowledge in the field of speech-language pathology
Works well with students, staff, and the public
Excellent organizational skills, interpersonal, and communication skills
Maintain confidentiality of staff and students
 
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY TO
Director of Special Education
 
JOB SUMMARY
To provide identification, intervention, and special services to students with language, speech, and hearing disorders to help reduce or eliminate speech and hearing impediments that may interfere with students' ability to derive full benefit from the district's educational program.
 
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
Providing Direct Services to Students
Utilize assessment procedures, techniques, and standardized tests necessary for thorough and accurate diagnosis of speech, language and/or hearing disorders
Plan, prepare, and deliver treatment programs for children with speech and language deficiencies
Plan and conduct teacher/parent conferences when needed
Inform parents and teachers of results of language, speech, and hearing diagnostic evaluation
Assist parents in improving their skills in working with their child's speech and language delays
Provide direct therapy based on individual needs
Conduct ongoing evaluation of all children in the program to determine appropriateness of their program
Assist in the referral of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community
 
Child Study Team and IEP Responsibilities
Provide diagnostic evaluations of pupils referred to the child study team for communication disorders, and participate in team conferences related to those pupils   
Develop and implement an individualized educational program (IEP) in conjunction with parents and teachers of pupils who are eligible for speech correction, and identify pupils in need of related services
Formulate long-term goals and short-term instructional objectives to be included in a student's IEP, Total Service Plan, and Instructional Implementation Plan
 
Maintain a close relationship with the child study team and serve as a case manager as assigned   
May participate in the child study team
Provide individual and small group intervention sessions with students who have been classified
 
Other
Conduct classes in language stimulation
Keep records necessary for each child and complete all required local, state, and federal reports
Participate in the development and improvement of opportunities for students with  disabilities by providing individual or group in-service experiences for staff and parents
Familiarize principals, teachers, and other school personnel with language, speech and hearing services
Submit reports to the Director of Special Services upon request
Assist teachers in developing language and speech programs to be carried out in the classroom
Address community groups concerning communication disorders upon request
Acts as an educational consultant to classroom teachers, guidance counselors, and administrators as required
Assume primary responsibility for requisitioning and maintaining needed equipment and supplies
Assume responsibility for his or her continuing professional growth and development by such efforts as attendance at professional meetings, membership in professional organizations, enrollment in advanced courses, and by reading professional journals and other publications
Adhere to The Code of Ethics of the Idaho Teaching Profession adopted by the Professional Standards Commission and the State Board of Education
Seek assistance should emergencies arise
Represent the school district in a positive manner
Know and follow school district policy and chain of command
Perform other duties as assigned
 
EVALUATION
Performance of this position will be evaluated annually by the secondary counselor/district test coordinator and/or the director of special education in conformance with district policy and IDAPA 08.02.02.120.
 
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
By contract as determined by the Board of Trustees in accordance with federal and state law, administrative rules, and Board policy.
