SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER

Qualifications:

1. Must hold valid Idaho Exceptional Child Certificate endorsed for the appropriate levels and areas.
2. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and transfer students weighing up to 200 pounds with the assistance of appropriate equipment.
3. Ability to work with students, staff, parents and the public.
4. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Reports to: Building Administrator & Director of Special Services

Supervises: Paraprofessionals

Job Goals:

To provide each special education student with a program that will enable him/her to reach his/her fullest intellectual, physical, emotional, psychological and behavioral potential.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Displays content knowledge and makes connection between content and other parts of the discipline.
2. Plans a program of study that aligns with district and state standards and meets the individual needs, interest, and abilities of students assigned for instruction.
3. Completes all district and state assessment mandates using the data provided to drive instruction.
4. Reflects understanding of current research and best pedagogical practice.
5. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of special education laws and procedures.
6. Develops and implements Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
7. Maintains student compliance filed in accordance with federal, state and local procedures.
8. Displays thorough understanding of typical developmental characteristics of age group as well as exceptions to general patterns.
9. Displays solid understanding of the different approaches to learning that different students display.
10. Develops instructional goals that adequately reflect identified individual student needs as determined by evaluation or assessment.
11. Uses assessment results to plan for individual and group instruction.
12. Displays knowledge of resources and knows how to gain access to enhance student learning.
13. Designs learning activities, which are suitable to students’ IEP goals.
14. Interacts with students in a polite, caring and respectful manner.
15. Conveys genuine enthusiasm for subject and students.
16. Supervises paraprofessionals and volunteers.
17. Responds to student misbehavior appropriately and successfully.
18. Demonstrates clear and accurate oral and written communication.
19. Engages students in learning
20. Persists in seeking instructional approaches for students who have difficulty learning.
21. Makes accurate assessments of instructional effectiveness.
22. Monitors student progress toward achievement of instructional goals.
23. Communicates with students and parents about student progress on a regular basis.
24. Mains and submits data for Medicaid billing as requested.
25. Moves, lifts and positions students as required.
26. Seeks out opportunities for professional growth.
27. Maintains high standards of ethical behavior and confidentiality of student information.
28. Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

Performs all other duties as assigned.

Terms of Employment:

An employee working in this position shall, at all times, be subject to the direction of the persons to whom said employee has primary responsibility or said person’s designee(s), and at all times shall be subject to the rules, regulations and policies of the District as promulgated by the board of Trustees. Each employee shall be held responsible for having knowledge of said school district rules, regulations and policies.

This position will be up to eight (8) hours per day; up to 190 days per year. Salary will be in accordance with the placement on the Certified Salary Schedule commensurate with years of experience and education. All terms of employment may be subject to change, as recommended by administrative staff or as directed by the Board of Trustees.

Evaluation:

Performance of this position will be evaluated annually by the Building Administrator in accordance with provisions of the negotiated master agreement and board policy.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; stand; walk; have sufficient hand, arm and finger dexterity; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The employee must occasionally transfer students weighing up to 200 pounds with the assistance of appropriate equipment.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but can on occasions be loud.
