Description: CARES FUNDED SOCIAL EMOTIONAL COUNSELOR

Job Summary:  To provide social, emotional, behavioral, and educational assessment and/or intervention to those students who demonstrate poor emotional and behavioral relationships between peers and/or adults in the context of family and community.

NATURE OF THE POSITION: 
Accountable to the Building Principal and Director of Special Services

Qualifications:  This position is designed for a Master’s level mental health worker.  In the absence of a qualified Master’s level clinician, a Bachelor’s level mental health worker with significant children’s mental health experience or a person with an M.A. may be considered

 PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:  

Responsible for assisting in assessments, clinical interviews, screenings, and referrals
Develop social skills training and behavior management programs that appropriately assist students to develop behaviors that increase their ability to obtain social reinforcement while decreasing behaviors that elicit negative peer and adult responses
Engage parent(s)/legal guardian(s) in the development of behavior management techniques, which facilitate parental generalization to community and home settings
Provide consultation and instruction in consistent use of classroom management  techniques proven to be associated with higher on-task rates and academic achievement
Provide assistance for transitioning students into the general school setting or assisting them in being successful in their current school setting     
Teach interpersonal skills, decision, and problem-solving skills                 
Review and assess appropriate academic goals and provide learning experiences for students                      
Facilitate re-integration of the student into the least restrictive family, school, and community environments                  
Provide follow-up services for students and their families               
Network with students, their families, school, and community agencies
Provide educational support to families regarding recreating success experienced in school setting in the home                 
Responsible for the development of individualized plans within the scope of the school day, document contacts, therapeutic service contacts and chart progress toward treatment goals                      
Complete progress notes after each session with students and provide a progress summary report at the end of the treatment for each student. Progress notes and reports shall be maintained in a file at the school
Treat students in the context of family and community to facilitate the student’s progress in showing improvement in peer and adult relationships which will be measured by a pre- and post-comparison of test scores.
Parent(s)/legal guardian(s), teacher satisfaction surveys will be administered quarterly, at a minimum

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly stands or walks, and occasionally sits and talks.  The employee occasionally reaches with hands and arms, climbs, balances, stoops, kneels, crouches or crawls.  The employee occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 25 pounds.  The employee occasionally pushes items of 50 pounds such as moving/rearranging furniture.  While most duties are performed indoors, the employee may be required to perform duties on occasion outdoors in various types of weather, including inclement weather with temperatures at or below freezing for extended periods of time.
 
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud at a standard acceptable level for this environment.
 
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 
This position shall be considered in all respects “employment at will”.  The “employment period” and other descriptions and terms set forth in this job description shall not create a property right for the employee.  These are set forth only to advise the employee of when and what type of services will be required by the district so long as the employment continues.
 
An employee working in this position shall at all times be subject to the direction of the supervisor to whom said employee has primary responsibility or said person’s designee(s) and at all times shall be subject to the rules, regulations and policies of the District as promulgated by the Board of Trustees.  Each employee shall be held responsible for having knowledge of said school district rules, regulations, and policies which have been reduced to writing and made available to the employee at the building administrator’s office and the district-wide administration office.
 
EVALUATION:  Performance to be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of Board Policy.
