TITLE: Maintenance Mechanic
PAY GRADE: Classified Salary Schedule
SUPERVISOR: Director of Building & Grounds.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 260 days per year. Works on-site according to designated schedule.
Responsible for the repair, maintenance, cleanliness and safety of all district facilities and grounds. To minimize damage, loss, and liability exposure in District buildings and facilities.
High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Valid driver's license for the type of equipment to be driven with no serious violations. Previous HVAC, electrical, plumbing, small engine repair, construction and/or building maintenance skills preferred. Ability to use standard District technology required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (This list of essential duties is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class. * Performs repairs on building systems and equipment as requested.
* Performs routine scheduled maintenance as required.
* Inspects District facilities to ensure safe operations and attractive and sanitary conditions.
* Identifies and immediately reports to the Director of Buildings and Grounds any damage to District facilities, emergency situations, safety issues, and major repairs due to vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc.
* Performs custodial work on a substitute basis as requested.
* Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies and equipment and orders replacements.
* Assists in seasonal grounds work (i.e. snow removal, ice mitigation, lawn care).
* Maintains security in the building and responds to safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, injured and ill students, unauthorized persons, alarms, etc.).
* Unlocks rooms, moves/arranges furnishings, and assists in set-up of (audio-visual) equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparations for meetings, classroom activities, and special events.
* Maintains accurate and current maintenance records.
* Secures facilities and grounds after business hours (i.e. lock doors, turn off lights, take down flags, etc.).
* Assists in answering the telephone, responding to routine questions, and routing calls to appropriate persons.
* May expect to be contacted occasionally during off-duty time and requested to report to work, primarily in the event of District buildings and grounds related emergencies (i.e. flood, broken pipes, vandalism, unsafe conditions due to inclement weather, etc.).
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to read and interpret documents and instructions, furnished in a variety of formats, not limited to safety rules and regulations, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing, in one-on-one and small group situations to staff, tenants, building users and the general public. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure. Ability to work in a professional and friendly manner and maintain self-motivation and a positive attitude. Ability to use power tools and hand tools. Ability to adapt to work independently/without supervision. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables. Ability to interpret and implement a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to work in a friendly manner and to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements, Board of Education policies, and applicable State and Federal laws. Skill to use district technology.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee constantly works indoors and moves about (approximately 80% of the time) and frequently outdoors and moves about (approximately 20% of the time). Constantly uses objects and tools, such as hammers, paint brushes, mops, and vacuums, and operates controls, such as on scrubbing machines and climate control systems. Constantly uses repetitive motions, such as in cleaning, mopping, sweeping, or painting. Occasionally remains in a stationary position, i.e. while completing a task on the computer. Frequently positions self in order to pick up garbage off of the floor, clean baseboards and low-lying furniture, clean underneath desks/chairs, and access (ceiling or floor) crawlspaces. Frequently reaches above the head and reaches forward, such as in dusting, cleaning, washing windows, accessing supplies, mounting objects on walls, changing ceiling fixtures. Occasionally ascends/descends a ladder to service lights, ceiling fans, and various hanging objects. Frequently bends or twists more than the average person, such as in vacuuming, lifting (i.e. mop buckets to empty), cleaning, mopping, sweeping, and shoveling. Frequently lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds such as garbage receptacles, cleaning supplies, and cleaning machines. Occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 75 pounds, such as supply boxes, salt, sand, and furniture. Seldom lifts and/or moves up to 90 pounds without assistance, such as unloading freight or supplies from trucks. Frequently pushes/pulls items such as tables, bleachers, mops, brooms, vacuums, and scrubbing machines. Generally, the noise in the work environment is moderate to loud. Indoor exposures include: noise from various cleaning machines, odors of paint and cleaning chemicals, and possible exposure to communicable diseases. Outdoor exposures include: variable temperatures and weather conditions, dust, pesticides, exhaust fumes, and smoke (seasonally). Exposure to building construction possible.
