SUPERVISOR: Director of Special Programs and Registered Nurse
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Work days will be designated by the Board approved School Calendar. The first day of work will commence during the week before the first day of school and the last day of work will coincide with the last day of school. Works on-site according to Director of Special Programs' designated schedule. Director of Special Programs will designate or approve all additional hours/days beyond the currently scheduled hours/days needed throughout the school year.

SUMMARY:
The Health Technician is an Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) whose role is to complement the Registered Nurse in the performance of providing health care to students, monitoring/recording student and staff health issues and performing related work as required. This work is performed as delegated and supervised by a Registered Nurse.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or equivalent required. Prefer additional college level coursework in a health-related field, including Medical Assistant (MA), Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Certified Pharmacy Tech; or two (2) years' experience in a school health office, and/or health care setting. Must meet the requirements established in Federal Regulations and pass the Paraprofessional Assessment. Will be required to meet Level I Paraprofessional Standards prior to first day of employment. CPR and First Aid certification required prior to first day of work. Spanish language skills or bilingualism preferred but not required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (This list of essential duties is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class. * Maintains current school health records; creates new records, updates health information; routes health records to various teachers within the schools as requested. Ensures that health records are maintained in a confidential manner.
* Attends to student health needs and provides basic first aid and assists with emergencies as needed. Calls parents regarding student accidents or illness; arranges for transportation home as necessary.
* Maintains computerized listings of immunizations, chronic health conditions, daily visits and health screenings for each student.
* Prepares first aid kits for buildings.
* Advises in the enrollment of students for the purpose of ensuring proper immunization history and verification of immunizations, and/or conveying or receiving information.
* Assists school nurse with screenings for vision, hearing and scoliosis.
* Dispenses medication, keeps records, contacts parents as needed.
* Assists nurse, students, and other school personnel for the purpose of providing specialized treatments, monitoring medical treatments and/or testing at school site.
* Keeps respective school nurse informed concerning health or student problems as they arise.
* Compiles health lists for nursing office, teachers, coaches, and counselors as directed by the school nurse.
* Supervises students for the purpose of monitoring students referred for illness related reasons.
* Consults with School Nurse regarding a variety of issues (e.g. emergency situations, neglect/abuse, assessment needs, infectious/contagious diseases,) for the purpose of resolving immediate safety and/or health care concerns, minimizing infection and complying with the law.
* Distributes educational and instructional materials for the purpose of instructing teachers, students and/or parents on a variety of health subjects.
* Maintains inventory of school health and first aid supplies for the purpose of ensuring availability of material as needed.
* Maintains medical emergency cards and health records (e.g. mandated screening, immunization records, medication logs, accident reports, daily logs, etc.) for the purpose of resolving discrepancies in records and/or providing information required by legal and professional standards.
* Performs record keeping and clerical functions (e.g. scheduling, copying, faxing, etc.) for the purpose of supporting health services staff.
* Prepares a wide variety of written materials (e.g. logs, re-screen lists, student records, accident reports, notices, periodic and year-end reports, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring compliance with established regulations, documenting activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information.
* Follows universal precautions and infection control procedures at all times for the purpose of minimizing the risk of transmitting contagious and/or infectious disease.
* Performs related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of medical assessment, general first aid, and clerical practices and procedures. Ability to adhere to safety practices; administer first aid; maintain confidentiality; handle hazardous materials; operate equipment used in medical profession; operate office equipment, including pertinent software applications; and prepare and maintain accurate records. Ability to perform basic math; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. In working with others, problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Ability to effectively communicate in one-on-one and small group situations to parents, students, and other employees of the District. Ability to schedule a significant number of activities, meetings, and/or events; meet deadlines and schedules; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements, Board of Education policies, and applicable State and Federal laws.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 35% sitting, 30% walking, and 35% standing. While most duties are performed indoors, the employee may be required to perform duties outdoors in various types of weather, including inclement weather with temperatures at or below freezing for extended periods of time. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. The employee frequently interacts with students and staff.
