Jerome School District#261JobDescriptionChildNutritionDirectorSUMMARY:Director of Food Services applies professional knowledge, ethics, and administrative skills in directing acomprehensive school food service program for the Jerome School District in compliance with federaland state laws and regulations,local and state health ordinances and Jerome School District’s policies.The director employs exemplary leadership and communication skills in order to maintain healthymorale, resolution of operational issues and strong working relationships with staff, students,purveyors, farmers and teachers, as well as all of the stakeholders.REPORTS TO: BusinessManagerEDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:•Bachelor's degree with academic major in food and nutrition, food service management,dietetics,familyand consumer sciences, nutrition education, culinary arts, business, or arelatedfield(OR)•Bachelor’s degree in any academic major, AND state-recognized certificate for schoolnutrition directors (OR)•Bachelor'sdegreein anyacademicmajorandatleast2 yearsof experienceinmanagement of school nutrition programs(OR)•Associate's degree or equivalent educational experience with major in food andnutrition,food service management, dietetics, family andconsumersciences,nutritioneducation, culinary arts, business, or a related field AND at least 2years of relevant schoolnutrition programs experience (AND)•Atleast8 hours offoodsafetytraining,eithernotmorethan5 yearspriorto theirstartingdate orcompletedwithin30daysof employee’sstartdate.•Possess ServSafe certificate within 30 days of hire date.•Experience in supervisory, management typeemployment.•Successful completion of Civil Rights and Food Safety training within one (1) week of hire date.•Maintain at least 12 hours of annual continuing education/training.•SNS certified within 5 years of employment.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:•Develop and recommend changes to food service program policies and procedures.•Serve as a liaison with school administrators and food service department.•Prepare and administer the food service budget including revenue projections and controlexpenditures in accordance with established financial management principals; follow allprocurement policies to ensure “three bids and a buy” is being utilized; analyze food servicefinancial statements and take corrective action; approve the procurement of products andsupplies.•Evaluate and incorporate appropriate foods from USDA commodities program into weekly menuplan.•Knowledge of and ability to translate knowledge of sustainable food preparation, recipes andmenus and utilize them in the ongoing implementation of the program.Revised December2021•Ensures that recipes are strictly adhered to, and that foods served are of the highest nutritionalquality and taste standards.•Directs the development of standards for the operation of quality food service programs.•Direct the development of staff training activities for food service personnel.•Establishes procedures for the selection, assignment, transfer and discharge of food serviceemployees in accordance with established policies. Hears and negotiates settlement ofdepartmental employee grievances and complaints as appropriate.•Directs the development of publicinformation materials and media releases pertaining to schoolfood service programs and meets with students, teachers, parents, vendors, employees, andcommunity groups to market school food service programs.•Communicates the policies, procedures, goals and objectives of the Food Service Department.•Manages assigned teams in the development, design, review, implementation and periodicreevaluation of project plans and strategies to support the achievement of the departmentalgoals and objectives.•Providesappropriate supervision, mentoring, and professional growth and developmentopportunities to assigned staff. Such responsibility includes the development andimplementation of professional growth plans to include keeping abreast of currentdevelopments,literature, and technical sources of information.•Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment andnondiscrimination policies; follows federal laws, state laws, school board policies and theprofessional standards.SKILLS AND ABILITIES:•Knowledge of procedures, policies, practices and methods of food service operation.•Knowledge of local, State and Federal regulations regarding school food services nutritionalstandards, dietary guidelines and reporting requirements.•Knowledge of facilities management and maintenance: Facility designs, food and equipmentspecification, warehouse and central production facility operation, profit and loss analysis andprocurement procedures.•Knowledge of technical computer applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet, Emailas well as working knowledge of K-12 food service software systems operating applicationmanagement, point of sale, and back office management systems (proficient.)•Knowledge of all Federal, State and City health, sanitation and safety policies, laws andguidelines as they relate to food service preparation.•Ability to direct, lead and communicate•Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and inwriting; train and supervise allFood Service Employees•Ability to prepare and administer budgets and reports•Ability to effectively communicate in one-on-one and small group situations to parents,students, and other employees of thedistrict.•Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concretevariables.•Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or scheduleform.•Ability to work in a friendly manner and to develop effective working relationships withstudents, staff and the schoolcommunity.•Abilityto perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Educationpolicies,and applicable laws.Revised December2021PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly sits, stands; walks, uses hands andfingersto handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
