DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Maintain confidentiality and mandatory reporting requirements. (Abide by ethical standard for school district as well as professional licensure.) Work with students on a group or individual basis in the solution of personal problems such as home and family relations, health and emotional adjustment, academics, and attendance. Identify appropriate coping skills, feelings, symptoms of stress, abuse, symptoms of mental health diagnosis and addiction. Respond to crisis situations, when appropriate. Is an active member of district wide crisis team leading in the development of suicide intervention and threat assessment protocol. Implementation of protocol when crisis arises. Implement developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities to meet student needs and school wide goals. Remain readily available to students providing counseling that will help lead each student to increased social/emotional development, personal growth/self-understanding, maturity and success in school (including problem solving skills, attendance, academic and career planning as appropriate). Conduct school wide counseling activities in the classroom. Partner with parent to encourage social emotional development and academic success. Work with teachers and staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered by the counseling department and work to infuse the counseling activities into the regular education curricula. Refer to appropriate community resources and follow up. Handle interruptions, prioritize work, and return to and complete tasks in timely manner. Evaluate and suggest revisions to the building counseling program, as needed. Manage or participate in student support programs such as 504, McKinney Vento, and intervention teams as assigned by the Building Administrator. Utilize community and district resources to support families in financial hardship. Attend parent-teacher conferences when requested. Any other duties as directed by the Building Administrator. In addition to the above duties and responsibilities depending on the school setting includes the following:ELEMENTARY: At the elementary level, counselors teach life skills to students through classroom presentations, group counseling and individual counseling. i.e. social skills, crisis, grief, emotional regulation, etc. Collaboration with students, teachers, and parents, explaining resources and student needs, providing young students with opportunities to feel successful.MIDDLE SCHOOL: At this level, the Counselor reinforces the life skills learned at the elementary level and is responsible for the development of a Student Individualized Graduation Plan including scheduling student courses. The Counselor meets with teachers and parents, provides referrals for outside resources when needed and provides more individual time with students for problems solving, issues and social skills.HIGH SCHOOL in addition to Middle School Responsibilities: Obtain and disseminate occupational information to students both individually and in classroom settings as appropriate, including: Counseling and guiding students and parents in the use of test results for college and career planning. The organization of career information by various methods including a “Career Day”. Making available information regarding college, military and life style decisions.
